Feds Investigate NCAA Scholarship Rules
: The Justice Department's
Antitrust Division is looking into NCAA rules that make scholarships renewable by schools on a yearly basis instead of guaranteeing them for up to five years.

- MLB as soon as this week plans to dramatically alter the course of the standoff between creditors and the owner of the Texas Rangers, multiple sources said last week, a development that could include the league seizing the franchise.

- FedEx has informed ESPN that it will not renew its entitlement of the Orange Bowl, ending a 21-year association with the Bowl Championship Series event.
League owners looking to reduce cost in the next round of collective-bargaining agreements are looking squarely at their rookies.

The last few weeks have revealed two interviews that strike many as objectionable. Namely, Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland asking Dez Bryant if his mother is a prostitute and an official from the Cincinnati Bengals reportedly asking Geno Atkins if he was straight or gay.  SI.com column

Judge Larson made 4 key findings that led to his ultimate conclusion that the NFL may suspend the Williamses: 1. The NFL is the employer of the Williamses for purposes of DATWA; 2. The NFL violated DATWA's three-day notice requirement; 3. The Williamses were not harmed by the NFL's violation of the notice requirement; 4. The Williamses failed to prove that the NFL violated DATWA's confidentiality provision. I have a new column up over at the Huffington Post that takes a closer look at the latest development in the StarCaps case.

Libby Sander of the Chronicle of Higher Education writes today about the Justice Department's interest in NCAA scholarship rules, particularly the one-year renewable rule for scholarships. Here's an excerpt:

Subject -  (Justice Department Examines NCAA Scholarship Rules)

I'd like to see more details about the annual review. Academic scholarships are typically predicated on maintaining some minimum GPA, which makes them subject to annual review, but the criteria are stated up front and the student knows what is expected. Are athletic scholarships guaranteed for up to 5 years if explicit criteria are met, or is each year a subjective decision? I don't know and wish the article were clearer. And now I'll pontificate. The cap at 5 years should be changed to however many years the average student at each institution takes to graduate. If the typical student at Big Sports U takes 6.5 years to graduate, then all athletic scholarships should be expanded to that number. Does that put institutions that average 6 plus years at a competitive disadvantage to institutions that average 4 years? You bet. So what? Let's reward the quick for promoting successful academics. Moreover, athletes should be allowed to negotiate the maximum length. If the coach is really jonesing for an athlete, let the athlete negotiate for however many years they want. Master's
degree? Doctorate? How badly is the athlete desired?

Texas High School Player May Be 22-year-old with Alias: Jerry Joseph, a promising 16-year-old sophomore basketball player at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, might actually be Guerdwich Montimere, a 22-year-old who helped lead a Florida high school to the state semifinals and was a McDonald's All American.

Investigation of Recruiting Criteria of Leading NCAA Division I Softball Coaches: Amber N. Kavekar, M.S., Trinity Valley Community College; Sally J. Ford, Ph. D, Texas Woman’s University

Abstract

Purpose of this investigation was to determine the recruitment criteria of the 50 winningest active coaches in NCAA I collegiate softball. Twenty-seven of the NCAA Division I head coaches completed a survey designed to assess their recruiting evaluation standards and measures. The survey 15 items based on the evaluation of a recruit including statistics, use of recruiting tools, measuring intangibles and tangibles, the preference of a multi-sport high school athlete or a multi-position player, when to begin recruiting, most desired positions recruited, and the important elements of a successful recruiting athletic program. Based on the analyses of the survey date, most of the coaches use similar criteria. Results indicated similar explanations and findings in current talent identification, recruiting techniques, and applications.

Red Sox Nation Grumbles Like an Entitled Empire: Has "creeping Yankeeosis has spread to Red Sox Nation?"cyber-stonings on the Red Sox message boards attest, creeping Yankeeosis has spread to Red Sox Nation. There is the same petulance, the same arrogance, the same intolerance for imperfection, the same obnoxious impatience.
